Enhancing knowledge and skills at work

Responsible for securing UK borders and monitoring migration, the UK Border Agency needed an effective way to give its staff the edge and help them move forward in their careers.

The challenge

Providing younger employees – especially those who joined straight from school – with job-relevant, nationally accredited qualifications and a structured career path.

The solution

Setting up a Business Administration Apprenticeship, funded by LSC London, which combines site-based learning that fits around the trainees’ day-to-day tasks.

The results

    • Employees with a better understanding of their jobs
    • More confident, influential and effective employees who can take on bigger workloads
    • Improved quality of work completed by apprentices

“Performance has improved noticeably as a result of the Apprenticeship programme. It’s a win-win situation.”

Chris Kates
Team Leader, UK Border Agency

Climbing the ladder to skills success

The modern firefighter does much more than extinguish flames and rescue kittens – and the lack of IT skills was fast becoming a burning issue for the Fire Brigade Union’s London Region.

The challenge

Finding a training scheme to give firefighters the skills they need to perform a range of everyday IT tasks – while taking into account their complex shift patterns.

The solution

A Train to Gain ITQ course that enables firefighters to learn in small groups, working through four IT modules on one evening a week before their night shifts, supplemented by a few hours’ home learning.

The results

    • More confident and efficient staff
    • Day-to-day IT tasks completed in half the time
    • Improved running of fire stations

“Skills in IT are requisite at work and in family life. Train to Gain has given Fire and Rescue Service staff the opportunity to gain these skills and get a qualification.”

Trevor Shanahan,
Learning Fund Manager, Fire Brigade Union
