Apprentices must be 16 years of age or older and, depending on which sector the Apprenticeship is in, there are three levels of training available:
Apprenticeship – equivalent to five good GCSE passes
Advanced Apprenticeship – equivalent to two A-level passes
Higher Apprenticeship – equivalent to studying for NVQ Level 4

Apprenticeships Available

  • Health & Social Care Apprenticeship
  • Children’s Care Learning and Development Apprenticeship

Skills Pledge

  • The Skills Pledge is a voluntary public commitment to drive your business forward by training your employees
  • Employees are supported in developing their basic skills and working towards relevant, valuable qualifications

Case Studies

Medirest combines IT with TLC for A1 results

The Ealing-based Medirest team undertakes a wide range of duties, from portering services and catering to cleaning and waste management – and IT literacy is becoming an increasingly important requirement of their work.

The challenge

Improving staff’s computer skills, so they have the confidence and knowledge to respond effectively when faced with IT-based tasks.

The solution

Following a comprehensive assessment of Medirest’s skills requirements, Train to Gain recommended ITQ: a customisable Level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) aimed at IT users. Twelve staff joined the programme and supplement their weekly classes with online studying.

The results

  • A team that is noticeably more confident at work
  • Improved levels of efficiency and productivity
  • Better employee retention levels

“There are benefits all round: for the employer, the employees, the industry and even the country.”

Jim Cloney
Deputy Hotel Services Manager,
Medirest at Ealing Hospital

Not-for-profit gains plenty from Apprenticeships

The Fremantle Trust is a not-for-profit organisation committed to providing high-quality care and support services – which means committing to training staff with the right skills to do the job.

The challenge

Ensuring that willing, compassionate and passionate people who want to work in the industry have the professional skills demanded of the job.

The solution

Introducing Apprenticeships in residential care homes based in the London Borough of Barnet. Through in-house support and training, all apprentices have achieved the Health and Social Care Award Level 2 and some have progressed to achieve Level 3.

The results

  • Talented apprentices who have become permanent care workers
  • Educated, able staff

“Three cohorts ran with great success. Initially apprentices had little knowledge of the care sector. Now they are knowledgeable and competent carers whom older people enjoy having around.”

Sue Hoyle
NVQ Coordinator, The Fremantle Trus
