Train to Gain

Leading learning and skills

The Learning and Skills Council is a non-departmental public body which began work in 2001, taking over the roles of the former Further Education Funding Council and Training and Enterprise Councils.

Beating the squeeze depends on having the right skills to make your business more productive and more efficient. The Learning and Skills Council puts these skills within your reach.

Our sole aim is to make England more productive and more competitive – improving the skills of young people and adults to ensure we have a workforce of world-class standard. We support businesses in London to help them maximise their potential through expert advice, coaching and new business techniques – a necessity to survive in the current economic climate.

The LSC’s major tasks are to:

  • Raise skills levels for national competitiveness
  • Improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the sector
  • Improve the quality of education and training delivery
  • Equalise opportunities through better access to learning
  • Increase adult demand for learning
  • Raise participation and achievement by young people

We are responsible for planning and funding high quality education and training for everyone in England other than those in universities. With a national office in Coventry and nine regional offices overseeing the work of local partnership teams throughout the country, we are committed to help businesses like yours get the training they need.

If you are a private sector or third sector company that employs under 250 people, our Train to Gain initiative now offers even more support specifically to help your business through the current economic climate. Funding is available for bite-sized chunks of training in business-critical areas such as:

  • Business improvement
  • Business systems and processes
  • Team working and communications
  • Sales and marketing
  • IT
  • Customer service
  • New product design
  • Finance and credit
  • Cash flow and profit management
  • Risk management

We can also help you develop management skills in your company. Up to £1,000 is available for businesses with 5 to 250 employees to fund leadership and management training and development, such as coaching and mentoring, or working towards a qualification.

Businesses with fewer than 50 employees can also receive a contribution to wage costs to cover the cost of working time spent training.
